TEHRAN, Jan. 27 (IRCS) _ The Iranian Red Crescent Society has responded to snowstorm-affected victims and passengers stuck on roads. Aid workers have rendered relief services to over 370 victims so far.
The late January severe weather affected some areas in seven provinces of Iran. During the past 48 hours, snowstorm and blizzard have affected the northwestern provinces of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Ardebil, Ghazvin and Zanjan, the southwestern province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and the northern province of Mazandaran. Seventy roads and villages are said to have been impacted by the snowstorm.
The snowfall and slippery roads required wheelchains to be fitted to vehicles.
35 operational teams comprising 102 relief workers were involved in carrying out relief services on the roads . The relief workers are currently on alert.
So far, 378 persons have received relief services by IRCS; 15 persons are shelterted in IRCS safe refuges as well. The IRCS relief teams saved the lives of a mother and her 5-month infant in a snowstorm that gripped the northeastern city of Oshnavieh, West Azarbaijan.
Relief workers also recovered 72 cars trapped in snow.
"In accordance with the Red Crescent National Winter Relief and Rescue Scheme, Red Crescent relief workers are 100% ready to help passengers in the country's roads,” said Morteza Salimi, the Head of the IRCS Relief and Rescue Organization. “Relief workers carry out any essential actions to provide relief and emergency sheltering for passengers.”
Iranian Red Crescent Society is currently performing national winter relief and rescue plan across the country.
