On April 29th 2017, a delegation from Cyprus Red Cross Society (C.R.C.S.) including Mrs. Fotini Papadopoulou, President, Mr. Demetrios Neophytou, member of Council, Mrs. Cristina Kapartis, Director General and Mrs. Maria Angelides, President of the Kyrenia Branch of the Cyprus Red Cross Society met with Dr. Seyed Amir Mohsen Ziaee, President of Iranian Red Crescent Society in Tehran to see and explore possibilities of further cooperation between two Societies in common interested areas of engagement especially in relief and rescue.
Pointing to the activities of the Iranian Red Crescent in the field of volunteering and cooperation of more than two million volunteers with the National Society, Dr. Ziaee said, "The Iranian Red Crescent Society relies on its youth and volunteer members and provides a wide range of humanitarian services for those who are in need. To this purpose, Red Crescent youth and volunteers are regularly receiving necessary trainings to do better humanitarian works,"
Dr. Ziaee also referred to a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support 5,000 vulnerable families in Somalia and Kenya, through a Hunger Resilience and Food Security partnership. The MoU builds on existing cooperation between the two organisations and is implementing in collaboration with the Somali Red Crescent Society and the Kenya Red Cross Society to help target communities affected by humanitarian crises in Africa.
He also added that the Iranian Red Crescent is also implementing public education programs aiming at scaling up prevention and disaster preparedness measures. So, the trainings of youth, volunteers and staff are always considered as great importance within the Society.
Expressing the readiness of the Iranian Red Crescent for developing more cooperation with other National Societies including the Cyprus Red Cross, Dr. Ziaee said, "The Iranian Red Crescent is ready to increase cooperation with the Cyprus Red Cross and exchange its experience for developing further cooperation and strengthen bilateral capacity building based on the Memorandum of Understanding.
During her meeting with Dr. Ziaee, Mrs. Fotini Papadopoulou, President of Cyprus Red Cross Society said that efforts of more than 2 million volunteers in the Iranian Red Crescent have impressed her. "The Cyprus Red Cross is ready to develop its further cooperation with the Iranian Red Crescent in the field of relief and rescue activities,"
"Cyprus Red Cross is enjoying voluntary activities and relief teams, but there is a need for further strengthening our teams….. In total, our usual activities are first aid trainings, psychological and social support services in emergencies and blood donation," she stated in her speech.
Referring to the issue of Syrian migrants in Cyprus, she also noted that a camp has been set up for these asylum seekers in Cyprus and Cyprus Red Cross also established a centre to support children with disabilities and to provide medical rehabilitation such as physiotherapy services to children and disabled adults.
Mr. Demetrios Neophytou, member of the Cyprus Red Cross Council also stressed, "This visit is a good starting point to begin cooperation between the two National Societies."Cyprus Red Cross enjoys close cooperation with the International Federation and other National Societies and is willing to develop cooperation with the Iranian Red Crescent, as well,"
