IRCS Volunteers Donate 21,000 Units of Blood

TEHRAN, 7 June 2020 (IRCS) - Volunteers and young members of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) have donated 21,000 units of blood during COVID-19 outbreak in the country.


In his first meeting with correspondents and reporters on June 7, IRCS spokesman Mohammad Nasiri, said that since COVID-19 has emerged in the country, 72,694 Red Crescent volunteers have supported the Society by raising public donations, sanitizing public spaces, and providing psychological support for patients with COVID-19.

The Iranian Red Crescent has distributed nearly 5 million protective masks since the pandemic’s outbreak in the country.

“These masks were distributed to hospital staff as well as citizens,” said Nasiri.

Furthermore, the Red Crescent has distributed 240,000 hygienic packages in suburbs as well as 201 food and livelihood parcels.

The Society plans to distribute 4,000 livelihood parcels in Tehran and Alborz provinces among needy people who have been affected by Covid-19.

Referring to blood shortages in addition to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, IRCS spokesman said that the Red Crescent volunteers and young members donated 21,000 units of blood to support the patients.

According to Nasiri, 144 cases of cash and in-kind contributions have come to the Iranian Red Crescent from international organisations and institutions.

The in-kind contributions include protective masks, gloves, gowns, isolated clothing, clinical thermometers, face shields, sanitizing items and ventilators which have been sent from International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), China Red Cross, Hong Kong Red Cross, governments of Japan, Thailand, Oman, UN agencies such as WFP and WHO and Iranian benefactors living in the United States and Switzerland.

Furthermore, ICRC has donated 465,000 euros to support the Iranian Red Crescent fighting against COVID-19. IRCS has used the ICRC contribution for screening and measuring people’s body temperature in provinces.
