UPDATED/ 5.2-magnitude quake jolts southwestern Iran

YASUJ, 24 May 2020 (IRCS) - Red Crescent sent its teams to the scene after an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Dogonbadan, ‎Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province, southwestern Iran, on Sunday, May 24. ‎

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the earthquake occurred at 13:41 local time and at the depth of 10 km underground.

16 people were injured in Gachsaran County, while fleeing after the ‎quake, and 15 received outpatient services. One person broke a hand ‎and was transferred to a nearby medical center.‎

Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) dispatched 12 relief and assessment teams to the epicenter of the quake, according to the IRCS Relief and Rescue Organistion.

IRCS teams have assessed most villages around the quake’s epicenter. Some cracks in rural houses have been reported.

Dogonbadan earthquake had no fatalities in border areas of Bushehr ‎and Kohkilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad provinces,said Mahdi Valipour, Acting ‎Head of IRCS Relief and Rescue Organisation.In eight villages in Mamasani ‎and Rostam Counties of Fars province no damage or deaths have been reported. In Baba Kalan ‎area, mountain fall has been observed.”‎

Kohkilouyeh and Boyer Ahmad province neighbors Fars and ‎Bushehr provinces.‎

According to Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Office of Kohgiluyeh and ‎Boyer Ahmad province, the quake caused severe damage to Dehdasht's historical area. In the past, this area was the commercial and economic crossroads in southern Iran.
