Iran Red Crescent Serves More than 68,000 Flood-Affected People in Golestan, Mazandaran
GORGAN/SARI/TEHRAN, 24 March 2019 (IRCS) – Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) volunteers and aid workers have so far offered relief services to more than 68,000 people hit by flood and inundation in Iran’s northern provinces of Golestan and Mazandaran.

Heavy rainfalls showered Golestan on 17 March, causing flooding, inundation and landslide. The showers mostly hit northern and eastern regions of the province, and Red Crescent teams have started supporting 56,406 people and providing temporary shelter for nearly 9,980 affected people since then.

Mohammad Ali Heravy, Managing director of the Golestan provincial Red Crescent branch, said: “Ten counties of the province have been hit by the flood.”
Besides pumping water out of 10,170 houses and recovering 289 vehicles from the flood path, Red Crescent teams have transferred 14 injured and two pregnant women to nearby medical centres.
“Red Crescent helicopters have carried out 80 flight hours to transfer 104,000 kg relief supplies to hard-to-access areas,” said Heravy. “Furthermore, Red Crescent has distributed 23,727 food parcels as well as 26,315 warm foods among the affected people.”
Iranian Red Crescent has distributed 41,075 mineral water boxes, 20,398 canned food, 52,368 loaves of bread, 490 kg rice, 10,598 blankets, 104 oil bottles, 4,040 kg plastic nylons and 4,254 ground sheets among the affected people in Golestan so far.
In Mazandaran, Red Crescent has rendered relief services to more than 12,000 people who were affected by the recent flood. The flood has affected 12 counties of Mazandaran.
Mojtaba Akbari, Managing director of the Mazandaran provincial Red Crescent branch, said: “Since the flooding began in the province, relief teams have immediately responded to the affected people.”
Red Crescent teams have provided emergency shelters for 429 people. Also, relief workers have pumped water out of 1,136 houses and recovered 514 vehicles which were stuck in the flood path.
Besides giving out hygiene parcels and 2,220 food parcels among the affected people, Red Crescent has distributed 23,000 loaves of bread, 15,240 kg rice, 4,047 blankets, 2,520 oil bottles, 677 ground sheets, 8,200 mineral water boxes, 1,300 canned food, 180 kg date, 160 kg flour among them.
The flood has subsided in most areas, but there is still inundation. The relief operations are running in Golestan and Mazandaran provinces and aid workers are on alert.
Following the public requests to support the northern flood-affected people, Iranian Red Crescent announced that people could donate their cash contributions via the Iranian Red Crescent Society bank account number.
