A bus carrying 18 pilgrims who were returning back to home from city of Karbala in Iraq, got out of road and fell into a running river through a valley called Haraz in northern part of Iran. In this accident, 12 passengers were dead and 6 passengers were injured and quickly transported to nearby medical centres by the Iranian Red Crescent in the harsh cold weather conditions.

Fifteen minutes after receiving a call about the accident, 16 specialised relief and rescue teams from Red Crescent provincial branch in Mazandaran together with rescue cars and six ambulances were quickly despatched to the scene. Red Crescent teams including 55 relief workers and rescuers with specialities on mountain, torrential rain and road accidents were engaged in the operations.

In the first hours of the operation, six dead bodies trapped beneath the bus wreckage were released but 6 others were missing. In ten day time, Red Crescent relief and rescue operations continued until another five missing bodies were discovered far away from the accident scene due to the flow of the river. Still the operation is continuing to find the last missing person
