KERMAN, Dec. 25 (IRCS) _ Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) launched a relief, cultural and sports complex in Rafsanjan, the southeastern province of Kerman, on Tuesday, December 25.

This large relief, cultural and sports complex, used for relief workers and volunteers’ relief and cultural activities, was launched in the presence of IRCS President in an area of 3,200 square meters.

“Kerman is an earthquake-prone province. The memory of Bam Earthquake (December 26, 2003) has haunted the Iranian nation and the people of the world,” said Prof. Ali Asghar Peyvandi during the opening ceremony of the complex and his 2-day visit to Kerman to mark the anniversary of Bam Earthquake.

“So, we ought to bolster Iran’s readiness to respond to disasters by strengthening and updating logistical and relief items as well as establishing more Helal Houses (literally, centers across the country, especially in villages, which render relief and voluntary services).”

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck the city of Bam at 5:26 am on December 26, 2003. At least 26,000 people were killed and 30,000 others were injured. Approximately 85% of the city was destroyed. Health facilities and administration buildings collapsed, both in the city and surrounding villages. All services were temporarily cut including telephone, electricity and water.
