UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner in Operation Affairs visits the Iranian Red Crescent Society
UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner, Janet Lim and Regional Manager of Asia Pacific Office of UN High Commissioner, Deizi Maria Teresa, met with Dr. Seyed Ahmad Moussavi, Secretary General of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) here in Tehran on 4 November 2013.
The visit aimed at discussing further development of the current cooperation between two organizations based on the request of UN High Commissioner.
Dr. Moussavi welcomed UN Delegation in his office in the Peace Building of the Iranian Red Crescent in Tehran and briefed them of the high capacities of the Iranian Red Crescent Society. He mentioned that the Iranian Red Crescent renders its services in the fields of the relief and rescue as well as health and social affairs throughout 31 provinces of the country.
"The IRCS Relief and Rescue Organization is one of the big regional organizations and IRCS covers 19 country regions with the Air-Relief Bases", he added.
Dr. Moussavi pointed to the IRCS Iran Textile Industries Company and Pharmaceutical Factories, as two main sources of providing the relief and rescue as well as health and treatment equipments, which are able to meet the needs at the IRCS and national levels.
During her visit to the Iranian Red Crescent as the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner, Janet Lim pointed to the refugee issues and focused on expanding cooperation and benefiting from high potentials of IRCS in health, pharmaceutical and logistics supplies. She hoped to continue more future cooperation between Iranian Red Crescent Society and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Referring to the active participation of the Iranian Red Crescent Society in social activities, Dr. Moussavi said that more than 2 million Youth Members cooperate with IRCS and volunteers perform remarkably all over the country. He also stressed on the readiness of Red Crescent for provision of the relief services at time of each disaster and crisis in world, if the presence of IRCS is possible.
