WFP Representative meets IRCS Head of Relief and Rescue Organisation

TEHRAN, 01 July 2020 (IRCS) - Ms Negar Gerami, United Nations World ‎Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director in Iran met with ‎Mahdi Valipour, Head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS)’s Relief and ‎Rescue Organisation, discussing cooperation. ‎

During the meeting which was held at IRCS’ Relief and Rescue Organisation, Mahdi Valipour expressed his gratitude for WFP’s humanitarian activities in Iran including serving the affected people in disasters, and said:“The Iranian Red Crescent did its best to support the affected people and families in Covid-19 outbreak. Red Crescent volunteers contributed to screening and measuring people’s body temperature in provinces, and helped medical centers and distributed hygiene parcels among the people.”

Referring to Relief and Rescue Organisation activities during Covid-19 outbreak in the country including clearance of international aids, he said that the organisation was ready to implement joint programmes with WFP.

For her part, Negar Germai said: “WFP has been working in Iran for 30 years. Our main agenda is to provide food aid but we contribute in crises, too. In fact, we try to function as the executive arm of the Red Crescent.”

The organization has also provided the requirements for the Red Crescent during Covid-19 outbreak in Iran. WFP has sent five shipments including 370.000 KN95 masks and 370.000 three-layer masks and it is about to send more consignments of surgical masks.

“We can provide hygiene parcels for the people affected with coronavirus, if needed,”Added Germai.

Last year, WFP sent aids to Iran’s flood-hit areas in three phases.
