Volunteers, basis of National Societies: IFRC President

 

TEHRAN, Apr. 15 (IRCS) _ IFRC President believes volunteers are the core stone of the National Societies and their dedication in providing voluntary services is the intimate legacy of Henry Dunant.

The President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Francesco Rocca, and Ali Asghar Peyvandi, the President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), held a meeting in Tehran on April 15 and discussed future bilateral cooperation in Iran and the region.

IFRC President, on the first day of his two-day visit to Iran, stressed necessity of addressing regional challenges in these countries as Syria through humanitarian channels, stressing more talks about the issue will be held at MENA Conference in baghdad next week.

Referring to the major role of volunteers, Mr. Rocca said, “We have to work together, me, you [referring to Mr. Peyvandi], the Spanish Red Cross, the Palestinian Red Crescent has been created on their volunteers, because the volunteers are the basis of organizations and with volunteers national society is alive. A lot of societies only have staff and this is not a good signal. We have to work, to be radiated these societies.”

Mr. Rocca hailed the Iranian Red Crescent Society humanitarian missions and activities abroad. “In many countries that I visited in my previous experience as IFRC vice-president or now as IFRC President, I met Iranian Red Crescent colleagues and serve poor people there like in Niger.

Referring to big continuous risks in Iran and reminding his previous visits to National Society, Mr. Rocca hailed the strong responses to natural and man-made disasters by thousands of Iranian Red Crescent Volunteers across the country and said: “What impressed me was not the numbers but it was the commitment and the qualifications, the training level of the volunteers and staff who are dedicated.”

IFRC President also stressed that training, preparation and dedication of volunteers to serve in big levels are the intimate legacy of Henry Dunant.

He assured that IFRC will support IRCS international level programmes in collaboration with International Federation. He also expressed his gratitude to Iranian Red Crescent supports from his plans and programmes in International Federation.

At the meeting, the President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) outlined the national society activities in nationwide and abroad. Prof. Peyvandi also referred to natural and man-made disasters on the second half 0f 2017 in Iran.

This is Dr. Rocca's third visit to Iran. The first one was in 2013 to participate in MENA Conference, and the second one was in 2015 as IFRC Vice-President from Europe region.
