TEHRAN, GENEVA, Aug. 8 (IRCS) _ Following the killing of Koohsar Fatehi, an Iranian Red Crescent relief worker in Kurdistan Province by unidentified persons, President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Dr. Peter Maurer condemned the attack by sending a message to Dr. Ali Asghar Peyvandi, President of Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS).
The following is the full text of ICRC President’s message:
Dear Dr Peyvandi,
It is with shock and dismay that we learnt of the armed attack on an ambulance run by the Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 20 July in Kamyaran, which resulted in the death of one of your relief workers, Kouhsar Fatehi.
The International Committee of the Red Cross condemns all such attacks. Healthcare staff and relief workers, and their vehicles, should never be targeted while carrying out their medical duties. This is another stark reminder of why the Health Care in Danger initiative led by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is still relevant in Iran and around the world.
Please convey our heartfelt condolences to Mr Fatehi’s family and extend our deepest sympathies to the Iranian Red Crescent staff and volunteers for this terrible loss.
