IRCS, ICRC launches "Repatriation Flight" exhibition

TEHRAN, 4 October 2023 (IRCS) - The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have organized the "Repatriation Flight" exhibition in Iran, which showcases photographs and conceptual artworks depicting the return of Iranian prisoners to their homeland after the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

Pirhossein Kolivand, the President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Patrick Huser, the Acting Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Iran, Yaghoub Soleimani, the Secretary General of the IRCS, and General Bahman Kargar, the Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of Sacred Defense Works and Values, were present at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on October 4. 

During the ceremony, the President of the IRCS and the Acting Head of the ICRC delegation in Iran held a meeting to discuss their cooperation, with a focus on climate change crises.

Furthermore, in his message to the IRCS president, the Director-General of the ICRC, Mr Mardini, expressed his satisfaction with the joint organization of the exhibition to commemorate the repatriation of ex-Prisoners of War from the Iran-Iraq war.

He stated that the exhibition provides an opportunity to celebrate the humanitarian efforts of both organizations and highlight their shared principles.

Director-General of the ICRC highlighted that with your leadership, I am confident that the IRCS will continue to be an influential member of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and positively contribute the humanitarian goals of the Movement.

During the ceremony, Mr Huser, the Acting Head of the ICRC delegation in Iran, delivered a speech in which he emphasized the historical significance of the joint activity between the IRCS and the ICRC to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the end of the Iraq-Iran war.

“Both, the IRCS and the ICRC have an extensive history of humanitarian services to the population affected by Iran-Iraq war in 1980s. And both organisations can be proud of their specific services that they provided in accordance with their distinct mandates and peculiar fields of expertise,” he added.

The Iranian Red Cross Museum in Tehran is currently hosting the exhibition.
