UPDATED/ ICRC President praises Iranian Red Crescent’s efforts during ‎recent war

TEHRAN, 29 April 2026 (IRCS) - The President of the International ‎Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) praised the braveness and efforts of ‎the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) during the recent war.‎

Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) met today with Mr. Pir Hossein Kolivand, President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) at the Peace Building of the Society in Tehran.

During this meeting, the President of the IRCS called for support for the IRCS and the Iranian people by following up on violations of international humanitarian law arising from U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

Referring to relief efforts of the IRCS during the recent war, Mr. Kolivand said that the Iranian Red Crescent was able to perform well.

“It was a tough situation, but the capability, strength, and expertise of our colleagues helped us get through these difficult circumstances,” he added.

Mr. Kolivand also called for support for the IRCS and the Iranian people by following up on violations of international humanitarian law arising from U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

ICRC and IRCS Must Seize Every Opportunity for Humanitarian Action

For her part, Ms. Spoljaric Egger praised the braveness and significant efforts of the Iranian Red Crescent over the past weeks, describing them as very important and a remarkable achievement.

She emphasized that both the IRCS and the ICRC must not miss any opportunity to strengthen international humanitarian efforts.

President of the ICRC added that reducing tensions is a prerequisite for effectively supporting civilians affected by war.

Ms. Spoljaric Egger visited today some of the areas in Tehran that were damaged or destroyed by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

President of the ICRC together with President of the IRCS visited a district in eastern Tehran and Gandi Hospital, which were affected during the recent war.

This is the first visit of Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric Egger to Iran.
