IRCS Holds Symposium on Traffic Accidents

TEHRAN (IRCS) - The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) held the First ‎National Symposium on Management and Reduction of Traffic Accidents in ‎Tehran on September 1.‎

Representatives of the Red Crescent, Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Planning and Budget Organization, Emergency Medical Center, Central Insurance, Traffic Police, Health of Law Enforcement Command, Iran’s Broadcasting, and WHO were present at this conference held at the Iranian Red Crescent’s Health, Treatment and Rehabilitation Division.

“In addition to the relief mandate assigned to the Red Crescent to save injured people in traffic accidents on roads, it is a moral task and a humanitarian mission,” said Dr. Pir Hossein Kolivand, the Iranian Red Crescent President.

Referring to the Arbaeen walk, he added that the Red Crescent posts are in full readiness to serve the pilgrims.

In another part of the Symposium, the Brigadier-General, Iran’s Traffic Police Chief, appreciated the Iranian Red Crescent Society's efforts in responding to traffic accidents, saying: “During the Nowruz holidays this year, 51 percent of those who were killed in the traffic accidents on roads, lost their lives before being transferred to medical centers. So, the actions taken by the Red Crescent in the first moments of the accident and the correct removal of the injured person from the car, are very important because this number could have been higher,”

Furthermore, Dr Syed Jaffar Hussain, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative and Head of Mission in the Islamic Republic of Iran, said that WHO is ready to cooperate with the Iranian Red Crescent and other responsible organizations for scientific planning in reducing casualties in traffic accidents in Iran.

“I have seen the Iranian Red Crescent’s rescue equipment and ambulances on the roads. The aid workers are very active, something that is rare in the world,” added Mr Hussain.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society plans to implement the campaign of “Nowruz 1402 without Traffic Accidents” during the new Iranian Calendar year’s holiday  which will begin from 21 March 2023.
